Spring is HERE!

The good news is that we can still go outside! However, we still need to protect ourselves from the sun. The sun causes skin damage and skin cancer, melanoma being the most deadly. Different ultraviolet rays have varying effects. UVA rays penetrate deeply, which leads to signs of premature aging such as wrinkling and age spots. They travel through glass and can age you while you are indoors! UVB rays are the primary cause of sun burns. UVC rays are actually the most dangerous but are blocked by the Earth's ozone layer. In fact, the US Department of Health and WHO have declared UV radiation from sun and artificial sources such as tanning beds and lamps to be a known carcinogen.

Thankfully, there are many ways that we can protect ourselves from these damaging rays. We should seek shade especially between the hours of 10 am and 2 pm. We can wear protective clothing such as long-sleeved shirts, pants, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses. Some clothing is better than others. Tighter weave and darker fabric is better. Apply broad spectrum sunscreen with a Sun Protection Factor of 30 or more even on cloudy days. One of my favorite products is Skin Medica's Total Defense and Repair line simply because it protects and rejuvenates skin simultaneously. They come in a variety of Sun Protection Factors and some are tinted.
