Kybella is an FDA-approved injectable drug that contours and improves the appearance of submental fullness due to submental fat (often referred to as a “double chin”).
A double chin can be the result of genetics, weight gain or aging and is generally resistant to diet and exercise. Now you can lose the double chin with Kybella, a non-surgical injectable treatment performed in our med spa.
Kybella contains a non-human, non-animal formulation of deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. When injected under the chin, the deoxycholic acid breaks down the unwanted fat. Once those fat cells are destroyed, they can no longer continue to accumulate or store fat.
Each in-office treatment session typically takes 15-20 minutes. Many patients experience visible results with two to four treatments spaced at least one month apart. Up to a total of six Kybella treatments may be administered. For most patients, downtime following a treatment session with Kybella is minimal.
Once the desired aesthetic outcome from Kybella treatment has been achieved, the need for Kybella re-treatment is not expected, as Kybella causes the lasting destruction of fat cells. Once destroyed, those cells cannot store or accumulate fat.
Kybella treatment costs vary based on each individual’s treatment needs.
What Are The Possible Side Effects From Kybella?
For most patients, downtime following a treatment session with Kybella is minimal. Most adverse Kybella reactions are mild or moderate and resolve without the need for medical intervention. Common side effects may include: pain, swelling, redness, bruising or numbness at the injection site and formation of small areas of firmness. Bruising usually peaks at 20-24 hours. The overall recovery time is about one month. However, the majority of our patients recover after a day or two.
To speed your recovery, use ice packs after your treatment then use warm compresses for the first few days after your injections. A chin strap is helpful for added compression. Also, consider taking an over-the-counter antihistamine prior to your appointment. We will offer individual recommendations to reduce the likelihood of side effects.
Avoid vigorous exercise, sun, and heat exposure for 3-5 days following treatment. Avoid aspirin, Motrin, gingko, garlic, flax oil, cod liver oil, Vitamin A/E for a week prior to and following treatment.
Alcohol, caffeine, niacin, cigarettes, and spicy foods may increase irritation and bruising following treatment.
